“Variants of continued fraction algorithms and their relationship to the fraction windowing algorithm for modeling the sounding pitches of multiphonics on piano strings”

ABSTRACT

In order to calculate the frequency components of so-called pure multiphonics (multiphonics consisting of harmonic partials of the fundamental) on vibrating strings, I developed my fraction windowing algorithm. This article discusses in detail how the fraction windowing algorithm works and its relationship to the closely related mathematical concept of a continued fraction. Ten variants of continued fraction algorithms are characterized and compared to the fraction windowing algorithm. At the end of the article, I summarize other general observations I made during my studies of continued fractions types.
